Project Overview
As part of an offshore gas platform modernisation program, a Power from Shore (PFS) solution was considered to electrify operations and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions from on-site power generation.
The envisaged concept consisted of an MVDC connection supplying approximately 80 MW from 2025 onwards, with a gradual load decrease over time. Based on an expected operational lifetime of ~15 years, the initial business case resulted in a negative NPV.
The objective of the assignment was to challenge the technical concept and financial assumptions and identify optimisation levers to improve the economic viability of the PFS solution.
Scope of Services Provided
Work Package 1 – Technical Design Review
- Review of conceptual design documentation, including MVDC topology, redundancy philosophy and cable routing
- Assessment of cable bundling and laying approach
- Evaluation of technology selection (e.g. bipole vs. symmetrical monopole configuration)
- Review of single line diagrams and equipment lists
- Identification of optimisation potential within the proposed design
- Assessment of feasible alternative technical solutions (e.g. alternative MVDC configurations, connection points, routing options)
Work Package 2 – CAPEX & OPEX Review
- Critical review of project CAPEX and OPEX assumptions
- Benchmarking against comparable projects using market intelligence and vendor insights
- Challenge of cost estimates based on optimised technical configurations and maintenance strategies
- Estimation of CAPEX and OPEX for alternative solution scenarios
Work Package 3 – Financial Assessment & TOTEX
- Development of a most-likely TOTEX scenario over the projected operational period (2026–2042)
- Quantification of transmission losses within OPEX
- Sizing of contingency allowances in line with industry practice
- Comparative evaluation of baseline and optimised scenarios
Main Deliverables
- High-level red-flag assessment outlining key risks, insights and mitigation measures
- Comprehensive evaluation report including benchmarking and optimisation analysis
- Refined TOTEX assessment
- Initial transmission tariff estimate (where applicable)
Project Outcome
The assignment delivered a structured technical and financial challenge of the proposed MVDC-based PFS solution, identifying optimisation opportunities across design, CAPEX and OPEX. It strengthened the robustness of the investment case, supported informed decision-making and contributed to the decarbonisation strategy of offshore operations.
