Project Overview
A power utility initiated a protection system improvement program to enhance reliability and address potential maloperation risks. Prior to implementing adjustments to protection settings and schemes (including the potential installation of additional relays), a comprehensive performance audit of the existing protection system was conducted.
The objective was to assess current protection performance, identify deficiencies, and define optimised settings and scheme enhancements.
Scope of Services Provided
- Collection and review of power system and protection system data
- Development of detailed power system and protection models within a simulation platform
- Execution of a protection system performance audit under various operating and fault scenarios
- Analysis of detected maloperations and identification of root causes
- Definition of protection setting adjustments to address identified issues
- Assessment and conceptual design of distance protection scheme enhancements
Project Outcome
The assignment provided a validated assessment of protection system performance and identified targeted improvements to settings and scheme design. The proposed adjustments enhanced selectivity, reliability and coordination of the protection system, supporting improved operational security of the network.
