Dynamic line rating
EGI supported the integration of Dynamic Line Rating into transmission system planning to enable a more accurate and flexible assessment of network capacity under real operating conditions. The project addressed the limitations of traditional static line rating approaches by developing an hourly, weather-dependent representation of transmission line ampacity, reflecting the influence of wind and ambient temperature on conductor capacity. This enhanced modelling approach enabled a more efficient use of existing network assets and supported more robust investment decisions for future transmission expansion.
EGI developed a Dynamic Line Rating modelling tool based on international standards, applied it to future system scenarios through detailed load flow and sensitivity analyses, compared alternative Dynamic Line Rating methodologies, and supported the prioritisation of transmission lines for implementation based on technical condition, operational value, and system benefits.
