A comprehensive technical and strategic assessment was conducted in the context of planned decarbonisation activities, primarily focused on the development of carbon capture facilities. The initiative requires a substantial increase in electricity supply, from approximately 35 MW to 120 MW by 2029. As the existing 110 kV grid infrastructure is insufficient to accommodate this demand, the establishment of a new grid connection was evaluated.
The analysis examined cost and risk implications to support a decision aligned with the 2029 implementation target. Multiple connection configurations were assessed, including different loading scenarios, alternative grid connection points, connection via different grid operators, construction responsibility models (client versus distribution system operator), and the use of overhead line versus underground cable technology.
For each option, key evaluation criteria included operational expenditures (OPEX) and high-level capital expenditure (CAPEX) estimates, permitting feasibility and approval processes, identification and assessment of principal project risks, and timeline considerations with defined critical milestones to ensure timely delivery.
